Să nu mai aibă loc ciocniri armate! Niciodată să nu mai fie terorism! Să nu mai fie război!”. "Să rupem cercul vicios al violenţei”: este ceea ce a spus Papa adresându-se preşedintelui Shimon Peres şi executivului la ceremonia de rămas bun pe aeroportul Ben Gurion din Tel Aviv. Papa a reformulat auspiciile pentru o pace durabilă bazată pe dreptate: „Să fie recunoscut la nivel universal că statul Israel are dreptul să existe şi să se bucure de pace şi siguranţă în interiorul unor hotare internaţional recunoscute. Să fie deopotrivă recunoscut că poporul palestinian are dreptul la o patrie independentă şi suverană, la a trăi cu demnitate şi la a călători liber”. Benedict al XVI-lea şi-a exprimat tristeţea la vederea zidului: „În timp ce treceam pe lângă el, m-am rugat pentru un viitor în care popoarele Ţării Sfinte să poată trăi împreună în pace şi armonie fără necesitatea unor asemenea instrumente de securitate şi separare, ci respectându-se şi încrezându-se unul în celălalt, în renunţarea la orice formă de violenţă şi de agresiune”. Mr Prime Minister,
Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
As I prepare to return to Rome, may I share with you some of the powerful impressions that my pilgrimage to the Holy Land has left with me. I had fruitful discussions with the civil authorities both in Israel and in the Palestinian Territories, and I witnessed the great efforts that both governments are making to secure people’s well-being. I have met the leaders of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, and I rejoice to see the way that they work together in caring for the Lord’s flock. I have also had the opportunity to meet the leaders of the various Christian Churches and ecclesial communities as well as the leaders of other religions in the Holy Land. This land is indeed a fertile ground for ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue, and I pray that the rich variety of religious witness in the region will bear fruit in a growing mutual understanding and respect.
Mr President, you and I planted an olive tree at your residence on the day that I arrived in Israel. The olive tree, as you know, is an image used by Saint Paul to describe the very close relations between Christians and Jews. Paul describes in his Letter to the Romans how the Church of the Gentiles is like a wild olive shoot, grafted onto the cultivated olive tree which is the People of the Covenant (cf. 11:17-24). We are nourished from the same spiritual roots. We meet as brothers, brothers who at times in our history have had a tense relationship, but now are firmly committed to building bridges of lasting friendship.
The ceremony at the Presidential Palace was followed by one of the most solemn moments of my stay in Israel – my visit to the Holocaust Memorial at Yad Vashem, to pay my respects to the victims of the Shoah. There I also met some of the survivors. Those deeply moving encounters brought back memories of my visit three years ago to the death camp at Auschwitz, where so many Jews - mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, sons and daughters, brothers, sisters, friends - were brutally exterminated under a godless regime that propagated an ideology of anti-Semitism and hatred. That appalling chapter of history must never be forgotten or denied. On the contrary, those dark memories should strengthen our determination to draw closer to one another as branches of the same olive tree, nourished from the same roots and united in brotherly love.
Mr President, I thank you for the warmth of your hospitality, which is greatly appreciated, and I wish to put on record that I came to visit this country as a friend of the Israelis, just as I am a friend of the Palestinian people. Friends enjoy spending time in one another’s company, and they find it deeply distressing to see one another suffer. No friend of the Israelis and the Palestinians can fail to be saddened by the continuing tension between your two peoples. No friend can fail to weep at the suffering and loss of life that both peoples have endured over the last six decades. Allow me to make this appeal to all the people of these lands: No more bloodshed! No more fighting! No more terrorism! No more war! Instead let us break the vicious circle of violence. Let there be lasting peace based on justice, let there be genuine reconciliation and healing. Let it be universally recognized that the State of Israel has the right to exist, and to enjoy peace and security within internationally agreed borders. Let it be likewise acknowledged that the Palestinian people have a right to a sovereign independent homeland, to live with dignity and to travel freely. Let the two-state solution become a reality, not remain a dream. And let peace spread outwards from these lands, let them serve as a “light to the nations” (Is 42:6), bringing hope to the many other regions that are affected by conflict.
One of the saddest sights for me during my visit to these lands was the wall. As I passed alongside it, I prayed for a future in which the peoples of the Holy Land can live together in peace and harmony without the need for such instruments of security and separation, but rather respecting and trusting one another, and renouncing all forms of violence and aggression. Mr President, I know how hard it will be to achieve that goal. I know how difficult is your task, and that of the Palestinian Authority. But I assure you that my prayers and the prayers of Catholics across the world are with you as you continue your efforts to build a just and lasting peace in this region.
It remains only for me to express my heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed in so many ways to my visit. To the Government, the organizers, the volunteers, the media, to all who have provided hospitality to me and those accompanying me, I am deeply grateful. Please be assured that you are remembered with affection in my prayers. To all of you, I say: thank you, and may God be with you. Shalom!

Mentre mi dispongo a ritornare a Roma, vorrei condividere con voi alcune delle forti impressioni che il mio pellegrinaggio in Terra Santa ha lasciato dentro di me. Ho avuto fruttuosi colloqui con le Autorità civili, sia in Israele, sia nei Territori Palestinesi, e ho constatato i grandi sforzi che entrambi i Governi stanno compiendo per assicurare il benessere delle persone. Ho incontrato i Capi della Chiesa cattolica in Terra Santa e mi rallegro di vedere il modo in cui lavorano insieme nel prendersi cura del gregge del Signore. Ho anche avuto la possibilità di incontrare i responsabili delle varie Chiese cristiane e comunità ecclesiali, nonché i capi di altre religioni in Terra Santa. Questa terra è davvero un terreno fertile per l’ecumenismo e il dialogo interreligioso e prego affinché la ricca varietà della testimonianza religiosa nella regione possa portare frutto in una crescente comprensione reciproca e mutuo rispetto.
Signor Presidente, Lei ed io abbiamo piantato un albero di olivo nella Sua residenza, nel giorno del mio arrivo in Israele. L’albero di olivo, come Ella sa, è un’immagine usata da San Paolo per descrivere le relazioni molto strette tra Cristiani ed Ebrei. Nella sua Lettera ai Romani, Paolo descrive come la Chiesa dei Gentili sia come un germoglio di olivo selvatico, innestato nell’albero di olivo buono che è il Popolo dell’Alleanza (cfr 11, 17-24). Traiamo il nostro nutrimento dalle medesime radici spirituali. Ci incontriamo come fratelli, fratelli che in certi momenti della storia comune hanno avuto un rapporto teso, ma sono adesso fermamente impegnati nella costruzione di ponti di duratura amicizia.
La cerimonia al Palazzo Presidenziale è stata seguita da uno dei momenti più solenni della mia permanenza in Israele – la mia visita al Memoriale dell’Olocausto a Yad Vashem, dove ho reso omaggio alle vittime della Shoah. Lì ho anche incontrato alcuni dei sopravvissuti. Quegli incontri profondamente commoventi hanno rinnovato ricordi della mia visita di tre anni fa al campo della morte di Auschwitz, dove così tanti Ebrei – madri, padri, mariti, mogli, figli, figlie, fratelli, sorelle, amici – furono brutalmente sterminati sotto un regime senza Dio che propagava un’ideologia di antisemitismo e odio. Quello spaventoso capitolo della storia non deve essere mai dimenticato o negato. Al contrario, quelle buie memorie devono rafforzare la nostra determinazione ad avvicinarci ancor più gli uni agli altri come rami dello stesso olivo, nutriti dalle stesse radici e uniti da amore fraterno.
Signor Presidente, La ringrazio per il calore della Sua ospitalità, molto apprezzata, e desidero che consti il fatto che sono venuto a visitare questo Paese da amico degli Israeliani, così come sono amico del Popolo Palestinese. Gli amici amano trascorrere del tempo in reciproca compagnia e si affliggono profondamente nel vedere l’altro soffrire. Nessun amico degli Israeliani e dei Palestinesi può evitare di rattristarsi per la continua tensione fra i vostri due popoli. Nessun amico può fare a meno di piangere per le sofferenze e le perdite di vite umane che entrambi i popoli hanno subito negli ultimi sei decenni. Mi consenta di rivolgere questo appello a tutto il popolo di queste terre: Non più spargimento di sangue! Non più scontri! Non più terrorismo! Non più guerra! Rompiamo invece il circolo vizioso della violenza. Possa instaurarsi una pace duratura basata sulla giustizia, vi sia vera riconciliazione e risanamento. Sia universalmente riconosciuto che lo Stato di Israele ha il diritto di esistere e di godere pace e sicurezza entro confini internazionalmente riconosciuti. Sia ugualmente riconosciuto che il Popolo palestinese ha il diritto a una patria indipendente sovrana, a vivere con dignità e a viaggiare liberamente. Che la “two-State solution” (la soluzione di due Stati) divenga realtà e non rimanga un sogno. E che la pace possa diffondersi da queste terre; possano essere “luce per le Nazioni” (Is 42,6), recando speranza alle molte altre regioni che sono colpite da conflitti.
Una delle visioni più tristi per me durante la mia visita a queste terre è stato il muro. Mentre lo costeggiavo, ho pregato per un futuro in cui i popoli della Terra Santa possano vivere insieme in pace e armonia senza la necessità di simili strumenti di sicurezza e di separazione, ma rispettandosi e fidandosi l’uno dell’altro, nella rinuncia ad ogni forma di violenza e di aggressione. Signor Presidente, so quanto sarà difficile raggiungere quell’obiettivo. So quanto sia difficile il Suo compito e quello dell’Autorità Palestinese. Ma Le assicuro che le mie preghiere e le preghiere dei cattolici di tutto il mondo La accompagnano mentre Ella prosegue nello sforzo di costruire una pace giusta e duratura in questa regione.
 Mi resta solo da esprimere il mio sentito ringraziamento a quanti hanno contribuito in modi diversi alla mia visita. Sono profondamente grato al Governo, agli organizzatori, ai volontari, ai media, a quanti hanno dato ospitalità a me e a coloro che mi hanno accompagnato. Siate certi di essere ricordati con affetto nelle mie preghiere. A tutti dico: grazie e che il Signore sia con voi. Shalom!

Excellences, Mesdames et Messieurs,

Au moment où je me prépare à rentrer à Rome, je voudrais partager avec vous quelques-unes des impressions fortes que me laisse mon pèlerinage en Terre Sainte. J'ai eu des discussions fructueuses avec les autorités civiles en Israël et dans les Territoires palestiniens, et j'ai été témoin des grands efforts que les gouvernements font pour garantir le bien-être de la population. J'ai rencontré les dirigeants de l'Eglise catholique en Terre sainte, et je me réjouis de voir la façon dont ils travaillent ensemble pour le bien du « troupeau du Seigneur ». J'ai également eu l'occasion de rencontrer les dirigeants des différentes Eglises chrétiennes et communautés ecclésiales, ainsi que les dirigeants d'autres religions en Terre Sainte. Cette terre est en effet un terrain fertile pour l'œcuménisme et le dialogue interreligieux, et je prie pour que la riche variété des témoignages religieux de la région porte des fruits toujours plus importants dans une compréhension et un respect mutuels croissants.
Monsieur le Président, vous et moi avons planté un olivier à votre domicile le jour où je suis arrivé en Israël. L'olivier, comme vous le savez, est une image utilisée par saint Paul pour décrire les relations très étroites entre les chrétiens et les juifs. Paul décrit dans sa Lettre aux Romains, que l'Eglise des Gentils, c'est comme un sauvageon d’olivier, greffé sur l’olivier franc, qui est le Peuple de l'Alliance (cf. 11, 17-24). Nous sommes nourris aux mêmes racines spirituelles. Nous nous rencontrons aussi comme des frères, des frères qui, parfois au cours de leur histoire, ont eu une relation tendue, mais qui sont maintenant fermement engagés à construire des ponts d'une amitié durable.
La cérémonie au Palais présidentiel a été suivie par l'un des moments les plus solennels de mon séjour en Israël - ma visite au Mémorial de l'Holocauste à Yad Vashem, afin de rendre hommage aux victimes de la Shoah. Là j'ai également rencontré quelques-uns des survivants. Ces rencontres profondément émouvantes ont réveillé les souvenirs de ma visite, il y a trois ans, au Camp de la mort d'Auschwitz, où tant de Juifs – mères, pères, maris, femmes, fils et filles, frères, sœurs, amis – ont été sauvagement exterminés dans le cadre d'un régime impie qui a propagé une idéologie d'antisémitisme et de haine. Ce chapitre effroyable de l'histoire ne doit jamais être oublié ou nié. Au contraire, ces sombres souvenirs devraient renforcer notre détermination à nous rapprocher l'un de l'autre comme les branches d’un même olivier, nourries par la même racine et unis dans l'amour fraternel.
Monsieur le Président, je vous remercie pour la chaleur de votre hospitalité, qui a été très appréciée, et je tiens à rappeler que je suis venu pour visiter ce pays comme un ami des Israéliens, tout comme je suis un ami du peuple palestinien. Les amis aiment passer du temps en compagnie l’un de l’autre, ressentant une profonde détresse à la souffrance de l’autre. Aucun ami des Israéliens et des Palestiniens ne peut manquer d'être attristé par la persistance des tensions entre vos deux peuples. Aucun ami peut ne pas pleurer face à la souffrance et à aux pertes de vies humaines que les deux peuples ont endurées au cours des six dernières décennies. Permettez-moi de lancer cet appel à tous les habitants de ces terres : Plus jamais d’effusion de sang ! Plus jamais de combats ! Plus jamais de terrorisme ! Plus jamais de guerre ! Au contraire, brisons le cercle vicieux de la violence. Qu'il y ait une paix durable fondée sur la justice, qu'il y ait une véritable réconciliation et guérison. Qu’il soit universellement reconnu que l'État d'Israël a le droit d'exister et de jouir de la paix et de la sécurité au sein de frontières internationalement reconnues. Qu'il soit également reconnu que le peuple palestinien a droit à un pays souverain et indépendant, de vivre dans la dignité et de se déplacer librement. Que la solution des deux États devienne une réalité, qu’elle ne reste pas un rêve. Et que la paix se propage vers l'extérieur de ces terres ; que ces terres servent de « lumière pour les nations » (Is 42, 6), porteuses d'espoir pour les nombreuses autres régions qui sont touchées par les conflits.
Une des vues les plus tristes pour moi lors de ma visite en ces terres a été celle du mur. Pendant que je passais à côté, je priais pour un avenir dans lequel les peuples de la Terre Sainte puissent vivre ensemble en paix et en harmonie sans avoir besoin de ces instruments de sécurité et de séparation, mais plutôt du respect et de la confiance des uns envers les autres, et renonçant à toute forme de violence et d'agression. Monsieur le Président, je sais combien il sera difficile d'atteindre cet objectif. Je sais combien votre tâche est difficile, ainsi que celle de l'Autorité palestinienne. Mais je vous assure que mes prières et les prières des catholiques à travers le monde sont avec vous alors que vous poursuivez vos efforts pour construire une paix juste et durable dans cette région.
Il ne me reste plus qu’à exprimer mes remerciements les plus sincères à tous ceux qui ont contribué en de nombreuses façons à cette visite. Au gouvernement, aux organisateurs, aux bénévoles, aux médias, et à tous ceux qui ont offert l'hospitalité à ma personne et à tous ceux qui m’accompagnent, j’exprime ma profonde reconnaissance. Bevor ich mich zur Rückkehr nach Rom aufmache, möchte ich einige der tiefen Eindrücke mit Ihnen teilen, die meine Pilgerreise in das Heilige Land bei mir hinterlassen hat. Ich hatte fruchtbare Gespräche mit zivilen Autoritäten sowohl in Israel wie auch in den Palästinensischen Gebieten und wurde Zeuge der großen Bemühungen, die beide Regierungen unternehmen, um das Wohlergehen der Menschen zu erhalten. Ich bin den Amtsträgern der katholischen Kirche im Heiligen Land begegnet und freue mich zu sehen, wie sie bei der Sorge um die Herde des Herrn zusammenarbeiten. Ich hatte auch Gelegenheit, die Oberhäupter anderer christlicher Kirchen und kirchlicher Gemeinschaften wie auch die Führer anderer Religionen im Heiligen Land zu treffen. Dieses Land ist wirklich ein fruchtbarer Boden für die Ökumene und für den interreligiösen Dialog, und ich bete, daß die reiche Vielfalt religiösen Zeugnisses in der Region in wachsendem gegenseitigen Verständnis und Respekt Frucht tragen wird.
Herr Präsident, Sie und ich haben einen Olivenbaum bei Ihrer Residenz am Tag meiner Ankunft in Israel gepflanzt. Der Olivenbaum ist, wie Sie wissen, ein Bild, das vom heiligen Paulus gebraucht wird, um die sehr engen Beziehungen zwischen Christen und Juden zu beschreiben. Paulus führt im Römerbrief aus, daß die Kirche der Völker wie ein wilder Oliventrieb ist, der in den edlen Olivenbaum des Bundesvolkes eingepfropft wurde (vgl. 11,17-24). Wir werden von den gleichen spirituellen Wurzeln genährt. Wir begegnen uns als Brüder – Brüder, die in unserer Geschichte gelegentlich ein gespanntes Verhältnis zueinander hatten, die aber unter der festen Verpflichtung stehen, Brücken für eine beständige Freundschaft zu bauen.
Auf die Zeremonie beim Präsidentenpalast folgte einer der feierlichsten Augenblicke meines Aufenthalts in Israel – mein Besuch in der Holocaust-Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem, wo ich den Opfern der Schoah meine Ehre erwiesen habe. Dort traf ich auch mit einigen Überlebenden zusammen. Diese tief bewegenden Begegnungen brachten mir meinen Besuch vor drei Jahren im Vernichtungslager Auschwitz in Erinnerung, wo so viele Juden – Mütter, Väter, Eheleute, Söhne, Töchter, Brüder, Schwestern, Freunde – durch ein gottloses Regime, das eine Ideologie des Antisemitismus und des Hasses verbreitete, brutal ausgetilgt worden sind. Dieses entsetzliche Kapitel der Geschichte darf nie vergessen oder geleugnet werden! Im Gegenteil, diese furchtbaren Erinnerungen sollten uns in der Entschiedenheit stärken, enger zusammenzurücken als Zweige des gleichen Olivenbaums, die von den gleichen Wurzeln genährt werden und in brüderlicher Liebe geeint sind.
Herr Präsident, ich danke Ihnen für die Herzlichkeit Ihrer Gastfreundschaft, die ich sehr zu schätzen weiß, und ich möchte festhalten, daß ich in dieses Land als Freund der Israelis zu Besuch gekommen bin, genauso wie ich auch ein Freund des palästinensischen Volkes bin. Freunde verbringen gerne ihre Zeit miteinander, und es betrübt sie sehr zu sehen, wie der andere leidet. Ein Freund der Israelis und der Palästinenser kann nur traurig sein über die weiter bestehende Spannung zwischen Ihren beiden Völkern. Ein Freund kann nur weinen angesichts des Leids und des Verlusts von Menschenleben, die beide Völker in den vergangenen sechs Jahrzehnten erlitten haben. Erlauben Sie mir, diesen Appell an alle Menschen dieser Länder zu richten: Kein Blutvergießen mehr! Keine Kämpfe mehr! Kein Terrorismus mehr! Kein Krieg mehr! Laßt uns statt dessen den Teufelskreis der Gewalt durchbrechen! Laßt bleibenden Frieden herrschen, der auf Gerechtigkeit gründet, laßt echte Versöhnung und Heilung walten. Es möge allgemein anerkannt werden, daß der Staat Israel das Recht hat, zu existieren und Frieden und Sicherheit innerhalb international vereinbarter Grenzen zu genießen. Ebenso möge anerkannt werden, daß das palästinensische Volk ein Recht auf eine souveräne, unabhängige Heimat, auf ein Leben in Würde und auf Reisefreiheit hat. Die Zwei-Staaten-Lösung möge Wirklichkeit werden und nicht ein Traum bleiben. Von diesen Ländern her soll sich der Frieden ausbreiten, sie sollen als ein „Licht für die Völker“ (Jes 42,6) dienen und den vielen anderen Regionen, die unter Konflikten leiden, Hoffnung bringen.
Einer der traurigsten Anblicke während meines Besuchs hier war für mich die Mauer. Als ich an ihr vorbeikam, habe ich für eine Zukunft gebetet, in der die Völker des Heiligen Landes in Frieden und Eintracht zusammenleben können, ohne solche Instrumente der Sicherheit und der Trennung zu brauchen, sondern vielmehr in gegenseitiger Achtung und Vertrauen zueinander sowie unter Verzicht auf alle Formen der Gewalt und Aggression. Herr Präsident, ich weiß, wie hart es sein wird, dieses Ziel zu erreichen. Ich weiß, wie schwierig Ihre Aufgabe ist, genau wie jene der palästinensischen Autonomiebehörde. Ich versichere Sie jedoch meiner Gebete, und die Gebete der Katholiken in aller Welt begleiten Sie in Ihren weiteren Bemühungen, einen gerechten und dauerhaften Frieden in dieser Region zu schaffen.
So bleibt mir nur, allen von Herzen zu danken, die auf so vielfältige Weise zu meinem Besuch beigetragen haben. Der Regierung, den Organisatoren, den Freiwilligen, den Medien, allen, die mich und meine Begleiter gastlich aufgenommen haben, bin ich zu tiefem Dank verpflichtet. Seien Sie gewiß, daß Sie einen festen Platz in meinen Gebeten haben. Ihnen allen sage ich: Vielen Dank! Der Herr stehe Ihnen bei. Shalom!
