(March 16, 2009) The Holy See’s official website will be enhanced with a new language
added to it this week bringing the total number of languages to 8, said a communiqué
of the Holy See’s press office. The Chinese language will be added to the Holy See’s
website www.vatican.va on March 19th the feast of St. Joseph the
patron of the Universal Church. So far the Holy See’s website was in Italian, English,
French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Latin. The addition of Chinese will be the
latest enhancement to the website which was launched 1995. The Vatican has been trying
to constantly keep abreast with the latest in communications and information technology
to reach out to a wider audience in the world. Its last major plunge into the new
media was on January 23 when it clubbed with internet search engine giant Google to
launch a Vatican channel on the popular video sharing website, YouTube, where Catholics
worldwide are able to see Pope Benedict and important Church events. Earlier the
Vatican had also launched another website on Vatican City State at www.vaticanstate.va.
