Erection of the new diocese Hpa-an (Myanmar)


(January 24, 2009) The Holy Father has erected the Diocese of Hpa-an in Myanmar, by withdrawing some territory from the Archdiocese of Yangon. The Holy Father has appointed the first Bishop of Hpa-an, Bishop Justin Saw Min Thid, Titular Bishop of Lemfocta and Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Yangon. The new diocese of Hpa-an will include almost the whole state of Kayin and half of Mon State and will be dependent of the Archdiocese of Yangon. The new diocese has the area of 15000 sq km, with a Population of 1.1 million among whom 10,781 are catholics. It has 12 parishes, 31 religious, 15 diocesan priests and 9 seminarians
