UN Votes to send More Troops to Quell Violence in DRC


(20 November 08-RV) The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously today to send some 3,000 additional U.N. peacekeepers to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to help prevent a new war in the country's east. The U.N. mission in Congo, is the world's largest U.N. peacekeeping operation and will have just over 20,000 troops and police once the reinforcements are deployed. Yesterday, The Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York told the UN Security Council, the Holy See condemned the violence in the country. Violent unrest erupted in August in the Kivu regions of the DRC, and both the Tutsi rebels under Gen. Laurent Nkunda and forces loyal to the government have been accused of atrocities.
