(Oct.01, 2008): - The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India – CBCI, has welcomed the
assurances given by India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the European Union –
EU, that anti-Christian violence in the country would be curbed. At the EU-India
Summit in the French city of Marseille on Monday, Man Mohan Singh had condemned the
resurgent violence against Christians, and advised the State Govt. of Orissa to maintain
utmost vigil and ensure law and order and protection of human life and property.
CBCI spokesman, Fr. Babu Joseph in a statement on Tuesday said : - “In today’s
globalized world, news of injustice, human rights violations and discrimination, reach
far and wide. And it is natural that the world responds to such incidents, wherever
they occur. In this context, we understand the concern expressed by the EU at the
violence against Christians in some parts of India,” the statement said. “It is heartening
to note that many of our countrymen have expressed their disapproval at the attacks
on Christians in the country through articles in newspapers, panel discussions on
Television Channels and commentaries on radio,” the statement said, adding “as Christians
and true citizens of this country, we will continue to create an atmosphere of social
harmony and respect for all religions.”
