Indian Cardinal Oswald Gracias unable to attend Rome Synod on Bible.
(Sept.09, 2008): -Indian Cardinal Oswald Gracias - Archbishop of Bombay, who had previously
been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, as one of the three delegate-presidents of the
World Synod of Bishops, scheduled for next month in Rome, is unable to attend. The
Vatican did not elaborate. As a substitute for him, Pope Benedict on Tuesday, appointed
Australian Cardinal George Pell – Archbishop of Sydney. The other two delegate-presidents
are U.S.Cardinal William Levada - Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of
the Faith and Brazilian Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer – Archbishop of Sao Paulo. The
appointment of the three cardinals had been made by the Pope in June. The 12th
General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops from Oct. 5-26 has as its theme “The Word
of God in the life and mission of the Church”. Although the Pope himself is president
of the synod, the three cardinals will take turns presiding over the gathering’s daily
sessions
