Christians continue to protest priest’s murder in India’s Andhra Pradesh state
(Aug. 29, 2008) Christians in Orissa’s neighbouring state Andhra Pradesh marched
on the streets on Wednesday protesting the murder, nearly two weeks ago, of Father
Thomas Pandipally in Yellareddy in Nizamabad district. Catholics, protestant and
Christians of other denominations in the rally carried placards demanding to end crimes
against Christians and to provide adequate security to missioners working in the villages.
Speakers stressed Christianity advocated peace and harmony and worked for the betterment
of people. They also said they have faith in the nation’s judicial system and expressed
hope of police accelerating investigations. The body of 37-year old Carmelite of
Mary Immaculate (CMI) priest, was found on Aug. 17 on a deserted road near Yellareddy
town with some 30 stab wounds. Fr. Pandipally was murdered in the night between
Aug. 16 and 17 while returning home on a motorcycle after celebrating mass in a village.
