(20 June 08-RV) European Union leaders today agreed to continue ratifying a major
reform treaty. Known as the Lisbon Treaty, the document is meant to overhaul the
way the EU is governed and bolster its role on the world stage. Leaders were able
to overcome opposition from the Czech Republic at summit talks today by acknowledging
that ratification is suspended there until a court decides whether the Lisbon Treaty
is in line with the Czech constitution. Ireland was the only country to put the document
to a public vote and its rejection last week has stopped EU reform in its tracks.
EU leaders today said that when they meet again in October they will try to devise
a way to overcome the results of last week’s Irish referendum. Former Member of the
European Parliament, Jens-Peter Bonde, said that Irish voters will be asked again
to ratify the treaty….
