Quebec Reaffirms Its Catholic Heritage

(23 May 08 - RV)The government of Canada’s province of Quebec has rejected a proposal to remove a crucifix from above the speaker’s chair in the parliament.

The proposal was made in a recent report on how the traditionally Roman Catholic French-Canadian population can accommodate minorities.

Michael Swan is the Associate Editor of The Catholic Register.

He says that despite Quebec’s efforts to integrate minorities into its society, the crucifix is an important symbol of its history.
