(10 May 08 - RV) A rebel suicide squad sank a Sri Lankan naval vessel in the eastern
port of Trincomalee this morning, just hours after a bomb killed 11 people last night
in a crowded cafe.
The attacks came as Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province prepared
for today’s elections.
The government has promised the provincial elections
would herald a «new dawn» for the embattled region, which had been under rebel control
for 13 years. The rebels were evicted from the area last year.
We spoke to
the Archbishop of Colombo Oswald Gomis about the importance of the poll.
