(11 Feb 08 - RV) Rebel soldiers shot and critically wounded East Timor President Jose
Ramos-Horta and opened fire on the prime minister today in a failed coup in the recently
independent nation.
A top rebel leader who led the attack was killed during
ensuing clashes.
Nobel Peace laureate Ramos-Horta was injured in the stomach
and flown to a hospital in Australia in an induced coma.
Following the incident
Australia announced it would send more soldiers to bolster the international peacekeeping
force it currently heads in the country, bringing total troop levels to around 1,000.
