(07 Dec 07 - RV) The medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières reported this week that
Angolan soldiers have systematically raped, beaten and tortured thousands of Congolese
migrant workers before deporting them. The workers are illegally employed in Angola’s
diamond mines. According to the United Nations an estimated 44,000 Congolese have
been sent back to the D.R.C. in the past year. Meanwhile, in the D.R.C.’s North Kivu
province, fighting between government forces and rebel groups has forced thousands
of Congolese to flee their homes. Max Hadorn, Spokesman for the International
Committee of the Red Cross spoke to us from the region. He said the I.C.R.C.’s main
concern is for those in North Kivu who are trapped in the fighting.
