(14 Nov 07 RV) Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone has urged Argentina’s
bishops to remember that God must come first in the life of every true Apostle.
The
Cardinal, who arrived in Argentina last week as the official papal envoy for the beatification
of Blessed Ceferino Namuncurá, met with the bishops at the end of their 94th
General Assembly
He said: “Faced with the many challenges that evangelization
encounters in today’s world, we need to reaffirm our humble conviction that Church
today just as 2000 years ago, offers man the bread of salvation”. This he continued:
“is the particular duty of the Bishops of the Catholic Church, because our commitment
is to each person, we are an eminent and visible sign of the living Christ, priest
and pastor”.
The Cardinal touched on the issues of priestly formation, that
priests “ensure that the sacraments are celebrated with dignity and piety”, on the
question of catholic education which he said must aim to form a community that is
“solid and convinced” of their faith. Cardinal Bertone also underlined that while
Christians are called on as members of the wider community to “strive for a society
of justice and peace, through professional, political and social commitment”, they
must not forget that the first place in the life of every Christian “must be reserved
for God and as such the centrality of prayer cannot and must not be overlooked”.
