Pope Remembers Rwandan Genocide

(21 May 07 - RV) A letter written by Pope Benedict XVI to the people of Rwanda marking the “National day of Mourning in memory of the Genocide” was made public today.

In his message, the Holy Father said he wanted to unite himself in prayer with all the victims of the 1994 genocide.

He added that all those who died were the victims of terrible slaughter, taken by a tide of hate and vengeance.

However, he said the Church knows death has not the last word because it was overcome by the victorious resurrection of the Son of God.

Faith, said Pope Benedict, stimulates confidence in the possibility offered to all the people of Rwanda, to build a better future together, through reconciliation and love.
