Climate change an ethical, environmental issue, U.N. nuncio says
( Sat.12 May, 2007):- “Global warming is not just an environmental issue but must
be seen in "ethical, economic, social and political terms as well,” Archbishop Celestino
Migliore told a gathering of high-ranking development officials at the United Nations
May 10. The Vatican nuncio's statement to the international body warned that global
warming and energy shortages could have a disproportionate effect on the world's poor.
"The consequences of climate change will impact first and foremost the poorest and
weakest, who, even if they are among the least responsible for global warming, are
the most vulnerable, because they have limited resources or live in areas at greater
risk," he said. And added: - "Many of the most vulnerable societies, already facing
energy problems, rely upon agriculture, the very sector most likely to suffer from
climatic shifts." Archbishop Migliore made the remarks in his address to the 15th
session of the Commission on Sustainable Development of the U.N. Economic and Social
Council. The theme of the May 9-11 meeting was "Turning Political Commitments Into
Action, Working Together in Partnership." Archbishop Migliore also said : - “
Ultimately, the earth is our common heritage and we have a grave and far-reaching
responsibility to ourselves and to future generations, for the actions we are due
to take here. He said “Solutions to the worldwide, unprecedented ecological changes
already taking place are possible, but the choices made, must not make things worse,
especially for the poor. We cannot simply uninvent the modern world, but there is
still time, to use technology and education, to promote universally sustainable development
before it is too late," added Archbishop Migliore – Vatican’s permanent Observer
at the UN.
