Media distort Church statements, Cardinal Bertone charges
(Tues.03 April,2007):-The Vatican Secretary of State in an interview with the French
magazine “Le Figaro,” has complained about media distortion of Vatican statements.
"We face a serious problem," Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone told Le Figaro. "Church statements
are the subject of manipulation by some Western media," he said. The Italian prelate
cited press coverage of the speech delivered by Pope Benedict XVI at Regensburg last
October. He said because of biased reporting, most people received a seriously misunderstood
idea of what the Pontiff had actually said. Cardinal Bertone suggested that the coverage
was intentionally slanted to fit the preconceptions of Western secularists. In the
same interview with Le Figaro, Vatican’s Secretary of State provided confirmation
that Pope Benedict will soon release a motu proprio, allowing much broader use of
the Tridentine Mass. The Cardinal said that "there is no valid reason not to give
priests throughout the world, the right to celebrate Mass in this form." Cardinal
Bertone declined to say when the motu proprio will be released. However, he did confirm
that Pope Benedict will give a public explanation for the document, in which the Pontiff
will explain his vision for the use of the old Missal.
