Pope Benedict XVI appoints Archbishop for Agra archdiocese in India
(16 Feb. 2007) : Pope Benedict XVI on Friday appointed Bishop Albert D’Souza of Lucknow
in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, as the Archbishop of Agra, also in Uttar
Pradesh. Born in 1945, he was ordained a priest in 1974. Fr. D’Souza was consecrated
as Bishop of Lucknow in February 1993. Agra Archdiocese consists of 15 districts in
Uttar Pradesh and two in Western Indian State of Rajastan. During the Moghul empire
Emperor Akbar had invited the Jesuits from their College at Goa at his Court in 1580.
