(27 Dec 2006 RV) Sri Lanka was in the thoughts and prayers of Pope Benedict this
Christmas. In his Urbi et Orbi address the Holy Father appealed that the waring sides
reach consensus for the good of the nation. In many parts of the island nation, people
are struggling to rebuild their lives after the December 2004 Tsunami, while ongoing
hostilities in the North East between Government troops and Liberation Tigers of Tamil
Eelam, are putting thousands of lives at risk. Duncan Mac Laren, Secretary General
of the Catholic Churches aid organisation Caritas Internationalis, is in Sri Lanka.
