Christians in Middle East Pay the Price of Western Politics
(23 Dec 2006 RV) The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams has criticised the
United States and British governments foreign policy in the Middle East, which he
says is endangering the lives of Christians in the region. In a commentary published
in The London Times today Dr. Williams writes that Christians in countries such as
Iraq, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Egypt and the Palestinian territories are seen as «supporters
of the crusading West» and that their already difficult situation is worsened by the
failure of British and U.S governments to develop a strategy to protect them. Also
today the Archbishop described the Israeli security wall as “a sign of all that is
wrong in the human heart”. He was speaking to the people of Bethlehem on behalf
of a delegation of British Church leaders who have just ended a pilgrimage the town
of Christ’s birth. The group included the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal
Cormac Murphy-O’Connor. Hear more..
