Pope Benedict XVI’s message for the World Day of Peace 2007
( Tues.12 Dec.2006):- PopeBenedict XVI ‘s message for the 2007 World Day of Peace,
which is celebrated annually Jan 1st, invokes peace upon all those experiencing
pain and suffering and living under the threat of violence, terrorism and armed aggression.
It particularly invokes peace upon children, especially those, whose future is compromised
by exploitation and the malice of unscrupulous adults. The Pope’s 14-page document
was released during a Press conference at the Vatican on Tuesday, Dec. 12, by Cardinal
Renato Rafffaele Martino – President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.
“The human person - the heart of peace” is the theme of the peace message that
begins with the Pope extending good wishes of peace to Govts; leaders of Nations
and all men and women of goodwill. The Papal message expresses the Pope’s conviction
that respect for the human person, promotes peace, and in building peace, the foundations
are laid for an authentic, integral humanism. The Pope’s message explains that peace
is both a gift and a task. It says that this gift of God is manifested in a harmonious
and ordered world, and also in the redemption of Humanity that needs to be rescued
from the disorder of sin. The message notes that peace is based on the respect for
the rights of all. It denounces deaths caused by hunger, abortion, experimentation
on human embryos and euthanasia, calling them attacks on peace. Another disturbing
symptom of lack of peace in the world is represented by the difficulties that both
Christians and the followers of other religions frequently encounter, in publicly
and freely professing their religious convictions, says the message and notes the
persecution faced in some States by Christians. The Church, says the message, champions
the fundamental rights of each person, including the right of the poor to essential
goods like food, water and shelter. The message also calls for an ecology of peace,
saying disregard for the environment always harms human coexistence. Pope Benedict’s
message concludes with an urgent appeal to the People of God saying: “Let every Christian
be committed to tireless peace-making and strenuous defence of the dignity of the
human person and his inalienable rights”.
