Pope Benedict XVI appoints Brazilian Cardinal to head Congregation for Clergy
(Tuesday, 31 Oct, 2006):- The new Prefect of the Congregation for the clergy is Cardinal
Claudio Hummes, Archbishop of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Pope Benedict XVI made the appointment
on Tuesday,Oct.31. Cardinal Hummes hailing from a German family, takes the place of
77-year-old retiring Columbian Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos. 72-year-old Cardinal
Hummes, a Franciscan, will head a very important discastery that concerns some 400
thousand catholic priests worldwide. The new Prefect hails from the strong Latin American
church and has many years of experience in the pastoral field. Born at Montenegro
9th. Aug. 1934, he was ordained priest 3rd. Aug. 1958 and consecrated
bishop in 1975. 23 years later, he was appointed the metropolitan Archbishop of San
Paulo and was elected Cardinal by late Pope John Paul II in the consistory of 21
Feb. 2001 .
