(18 September 06 -RV) The bodies of eleven Muslim men were found hacked to death in
a remote jungle in Eastern Sri Lanka today. Military officials blamed Tamil Tiger
rebels for the killings. The men were repairing an irrigation system yesterday when
they were attacked. The killings came amid an upsurge in violence in the island nation
that could undermine efforts by European mediators to bring the warring sides back
to peace talks. Archbishop of Columbo Oswald Gomis spoke to us about the current escalation
of violence and how he hoped it might be overcome.
