(26 Aug 06 - RV) AIDS activists launched protests this week demanding the dismissal
of South Africa's health minister as a new study said the country faced as many as
9 million new HIV cases by 2025 if the crisis is not contained.
Outgoing WHO
chief Stephen Lewis brought the 16th annual international AIDS Conference
in Toronto to a close last week with pointed remarks about South Africa’s AIDS policy
that upset members of the south African government.
Senior research fellow
at the American enterprise Institute, Dr. Roger Bate says while much remains to do,
South Africa has turned around its policy and made some progress in addressing the
AIDS crisis within its borders…
