(23 August 2006 - RV) Today is the International Day for the Rememberance of the Slave
Trade and its Abolition. The event is sponsored by the United Nations' Educational,
Scientific, and Cultural Organisation. It is held on the anniversary of an 18th century
slave revolt in Santo Domingo, which many people say shook the foundations of the
system of the slave trade and helped lead to its abolition. Sister Janet Fearns spoke
to Tony Tibbles, the keeper of the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool, England
- a city which once played a major role in the slave trade.
