Global AIDS Meet to evolve new strategies for HIV prevention

(17 Aug. 2006) : The 16th International AIDS Conference being held in Toronto, Canada and ending on Friday 18th August, has urged to look for fresh strategies to prevent HIV, such as microbicides and circumcision, without neglecting further research on anti-AIDS vaccines. The conference threw-up newer tools and strategies which could help avert millions of fresh HIV infections. According to the Global HIV Prevention Working Group — a panel of 50 leading public health experts, clinicians, biomedical and behavioural researchers, HIV prevention is likely to be enhanced by use of a combination of behavioural and biomedical interventions. The Conference under the theme, “Time to Deliver”, underscores the continued urgency in bringing effective HIV prevention and treatment strategies to communities the world over. “Twenty-five years after the first reports of AIDS appeared, the magnitude of this epidemic demands increased accountability from all stakeholders to fulfill their commitments, be they financial, programmatic or political,” conference organizers said.

The Catholic Church in India has been actively involved in the education for prevention, care and support of the infected and the affected. The Commission for Health of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Open University launched a study programme on ‘HIV and Family Education’. The Catholic Church has a comprehensive HIV/AIDS Policy, ‘Commitment to Compassion and Care’, Archbishop Bernard Moral of Bangalore declared. There are 65 care and support homes run by the Church-related organizations across the country.
