(18 July, 2006) In India’s north western State of Rajasthan, the new Catholic Diocese
of Jaipur has launched its social service wing - Jeevan Dhara Samaj Kalyan Sanstha
(JDSKS), to address the various social issues .Last year July 20, Pope Benedict XVI
appointed Father Oswald Lewis as the first bishop of Jaipur. The Bishop told SAR
News that “The Church in India is less involved in the social work ministry compared
to education and health, although there are some dioceses doing a lot of social work.
JDSKS will go to the villages and cater to the needs of the poor and marginalized,”
he said.The Society Director Fr. T.M. James said : - “The Society is formed keeping
in mind the welfare of the socially, financially and educationally marginalised sections
of society. It wishes to facilitate greater involvement of the people in development
programmes, involving the weaker sections of society,” he added.
