Pope Benedict XVI to stop at site of Spanish subway tragedy
(06 July 2006) : Organizers of the papal trip to Spain on 8th and 9th
July for the conclusion of the World Meeting of Families, report that details are
being worked out for Pope Benedict XVI to pause for a moment of prayer at the spot
where 41 people were killed when a subway train derailed on July 3. At the time of
the accident hundreds of thousands of people were travelling to the city for the World
Meeting of Families. The Pontiff is due to arrive in Valencia just before midday on
Saturday, July 8th. After an airport welcoming ceremony and before reaching
the city’s cathedral, Pope’s motorcade will stop at Jesus station where the train
derailed on Monday. A funeral service at the city's cathedral Tuesday was attended
by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and
his wife and other national and regional dignitaries. The city has been festooned
with posters advertising the papal visit, and flags with the yellow and white colours
of the Vatican hung from many balconies. However, the accident turned Valencia from
a city preparing for a festive visit by Pope Benedict to one, mourning its dead.
