Pope Benedict XVI appoints new bishop for the diocese of Ootacamund in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu


(30 June 2006) : Pope Benedict XVI on Friday appointed Fr. Arulapan Amalraj, Chancellor of the Good Shepherd Seminary of Coimbatore in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Fr. Amalraj was born on 4 December 1953 in the diocese of Ootacamund. After finishing his ecclesiastical studies at St. Peter’s Poinfical Seminary at Bangalore, he was ordained a priest on 26 December 1980. Fr. Amalraj obtained his Licentiate and Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas – Angelicum – in Rome from 1982 to 1987. From 1988 Fr. Amalraj has been a professor in the Good Shepherd Seminary of Coimbatore. In 1996 he was appointed Chancellor of the same seminary, the post which he held till 2005. The Diocese of Ootacamund, suffragan of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry-Cuddalore, was erected in 1955. It has over 85,000 Catholics in 59 parishes with 116 priests.
