(16 Jun 06 - RV) South Africa today marked the 30th anniversary of the Soweto uprising.
The protest by black students against a law forcing them to learn Afikaans proved
to be fundemental in the fight against Apartheid. The country’s President Thabo
Mbeki lead a march down the route taken by the students while wreaths were laid at
a memorial to those killed in clashes with police. But now, some youth are hosting
parties which are indicative of an ambivalence that exists among them regarding the
real meaning behind what happened June 16th 1976. This concern has been
expressed by the Southern African Bishops Conference. To find out more, we spoke
