( 06 May 2006 RV) St Peter’s square was invaded by the proud colours of the Pontifical
Swiss guards this afternoon, for the swearing in of new halberdiers or guardsmen.
The usually private and solemn ceremony took place before a enthusiastic public for
the first time in over 500 years, as part of celebrations to mark the papal guards
anniversary. Earlier today in a moving tribute to the many young men who have served
the Pope’s through the centuries Pope Benedict called their dedication an example
