(25 Mar 2005 RV) Pope Benedict XVI has urged the president of Afghanistan to pardon
an Afghan man who risks execution for converting to Christianity. In a letter written
by secretary of state Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Holy Father also appealed for respect
for human rights to be sanctioned in the preamble of the new Afghan constitution.
Afghan government officials are meeting in the country’s capital city Kabul today
to discuss ways of resolving the controversy. Robert white reports.
