( 25 Mar 2005 RV) “A sign of Pope Benedict’s special affection for the whole Chinese population” that is how Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo, Vatican secretary for relations with states has described the holy father’s elevation of Hong Kong’s archbishop Joseph Zen, to the office of cardinal.


The archbishop added that "The Pope is confident that the meaning of such a gesture will be properly understood and, in some way, returned by Chinese authorities."
