Pope Benedict XVI erects the Diocese of Jashpur in India and appoints a new bishop to the diocese of Raigarh


(March 23, 2006) : Pope Benedict XVI erected on March 23rd the Diocese of Jashpur in India’s State of Chhattisgarh. The new diocese has been carved out from the territory taken from the Diocese of Raigarh, making it saffragan to the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Raipur. Pope Benedict then appointed Bishop Victor Kindo as the first bishop of the newly erected diocese of Jashpur. The Pope also appointed Msgr. Paul Toppo, the Vicar General of the diocese of Raigarh as its new bishop. Born in 1957 in Garla village of Raigarh diocese, bishop Paul Toppo did his theological studies at St. Albert’s College in Ranchi. He obtained his Licentiate in liturgy through the Papal institute of St. Anselmo in Rome. He was ordained a priest on 24th May 1988. From 1995 to 97 he was secretary to the bishop of Raigarh. Geographically the new diocese of Jashpur comprises of the entire civil District of Jashpur of the State of Chhattisgarh, and is confined to the West and North with the Diocese of Ambikapur, to East with the Diocese of Gumla, and to South with the mother-Diocese of Raigarh.
