(20 Feb 2006 RV) Pope Benedict said today that the world's religions and their symbols
must be respected. The Holy Father’s appeal was made as he accepted the letters of
credentials from the new Moroccan ambassador to the Holy See, Ali Achour. During his
address to the Ambassador Pope Benedict added that intolerance and violence, can never
be justified as a response to any offence, because it is incompatible with the sacred
principles of religion. Meanwhile demonstrations over cartoons satirising Muhammad
continue across the Muslim world, many turning violent and nuturing hate. In the
southern Pakistani city of Sukkur two churches were attcaked and a priest breaten
by a mob motivated by rumors a christian man had desecrated the fundamental islamic
text, the Quran. Bishop of Islamabad - Rawalpindi Anthony Theodore Lobo says the rumor
which led to the violence is false…
