(16 December 2005 - RV) Pope Benedict XVI addressed members of the Italian Armed Forces
in Saint Peter's Basilica this morning, who had gathered to celebrate Mass with Archbishop
Angelo Bagnasco, Ordinary of the Italian Military. In his greeting, he stressed the
importance of preparing with humility and sincerity for the coming of the Lord as
the Church enters the novena leading up to the celebration of the Solemnity of the
Nativity of Our Lord. Reminding them that he who is adored in the Blessed Sacrament
is "Emmanuel," God-with-us, he prayed that their desire to encounter Christ, the Prince
of Peace, would be a source of authentic joy in their lives. He concluded by extending
to them and their families his Apostolic Blessing.
